Getting the garden ready for Easter

Easter weekend is a time when everyone’s hoping to be able to get outside and enjoy their garden.
The Friday and Monday bank holidays are the first since the New Year, and spring has brought in the warmer, longer days to replace the storms and chill of winter.
People are looking forward to Easter egg hunts, al fresco dining and generally relaxing in the sunshine.
Preparing the patio
For many, the patio is an extension of the house. And it needs as much care decoration-wise as inside – particularly after weathering the harsh batterings of the winter months.
Now’s a good time to take off the protective coverings from the patio tables, chairs and benches. Do they need a lick of paint? What about the decking or paving and the garden paths? Will they benefit from a pressure wash?
We mentioned in our blog post Jobs for the garden in April that it’s a good time to check the garden fencing and structures – sheds, gazebos, arbours, etc. They may need repairs following the winter, particularly after the February storms, and might also need a touch or two of paint or a coat of wood protection.
Take a look at our decorating products for all you’ll need, from paint brushes, rollers and trays to extension poles and scuttles.
Sprucing up the garden
Pruning can help smarten up the borders. Cutting back overgrown and unruly shrubs and plants in spring also encourages growth and a greater profusion of flowers and foliage later in the year. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has a list of shrubs and plants that benefit from a spring pruning.
And while the garden waking up from winter means blossom on the trees and spring flowers blooming, the weeds will be springing up too. Keeping on top of them is not only about tidying the appearance of your garden. If not removed, weeds can damage the plants you want to prosper, taking moisture and nutrients from them and leaving them open to disease.
We have all sorts of tools to help with weeding, including our Heritage range of quality stainless steel hand tools created in a traditional style. There’s also a wide range of junior tools to get the children interested and out into the garden.
And a neat, tidy, mowed lawn is perfect for staging that Easter egg hunt.
A weekend of gardening
But if your ideal Easter holiday is a weekend spent gardening rather than socialising – or a mixture of both – then we can help. You can find everything from tools to build raised vegetable beds or undertake major landscaping projects to those for pruning, weeding and taking care of the lawns.
We also have an exciting new range of gardening gift sets. So, if chocolate’s not your thing, why not get some inspiration for Easter presents by taking a look at the gardening gifts at your local stockist.
We know that Easter can be hit and miss weather-wise, but Easter is late this year – almost as late as it can fall – so here’s hoping for a weekend of beautiful, balmy sunshine. And if the weather doesn’t end up playing ball, at least you can look out onto beautiful, tidy borders and a neat, trim lawn.
