National Children's Gardening Week is here | Draper Tools

Happy National Children's Gardening Week - a week long celebration of the fun and benefits of gardening for kids. Here's a look at how we're celebrating this special week and why we think gardening is so good for children (and adults alike!).

Youth Options Guide to Getting Outdoors

To mark the occasion we’ve teamed up with a local charity, Youth Options, who've recently launched a guide to getting outdoors and making the most of nature. Check out the guide here – it’s jam-packed full of inspiration on what to grow and easy ways to attract wildlife to your garden. The guide is already proving popular with the local community and we’re so proud to be part of this special project.

What's more, everyone who downloads the guide has a chance to win a set of Draper gardening hand tools.

Healthy eating never tasted so good

Kids and eating veggies don’t always go together – but it can be a very different story when they’ve grown the produce themselves. To see a seed grow into something that can be eaten and enjoyed is very powerful. Homegrown fruit and veg tastes great and encourages you to get creative with recipes, whether it’s courgette cake, colourful salads and soups or fruit smoothies. Fresh fruit and vegetables are an excellent source of vitamins, minerals and dietary fibre and growing your own is a great way to motivate children (and adults) to get their five-a-day.

Nature is good for all ages

Many studies have shown that time in nature is an antidote for stress, lowing blood pressure and stress hormone levels, reducing anxiety and improving mood. It’s even been shown to enhance creativity and problem-solving. Whether you’re an adult or a child, we can all benefit from time spent in nature.

Help pollinators, help the planet

Bees and other insects provide an amazing service by pollinating the plants we grow and it has been widely reported that we all depend on the survival of bees. They make a huge contribution sustainable development, but they face many threats in today’s climate. You can do your bit to help bees and help the future of the planet by growing flowers that are rich in pollen and nectar and planting a variety that will bloom throughout the year. You can find more tips on creating a bee friendly garden here.

Top tools for young gardeners

There's never been a better time to get kids into gardening. For keen green-fingered children, Draper Tools offers a Young Gardener range of hand tools to help them grow their own flowers, fruit and vegetables. The range includes everything from spades, forks and trowels to rakes and gloves too – everything little ones need to get stuck into gardening. These tools are not toys, they’re the same high quality as our full size tools, simply designed to be smaller and better suited to children.
