Storms Dudley and Eunice – can we help?

In January, we posted a blog outlining some ideas for preparing for the early months of the year and getting ready to deal with the typical snowfall, floods and storms of winter.

When writing it, we hadn’t anticipated the arrival of storms Dudley and Eunice. Storm Dudley has already hit and caused some damage, while the Met Office has put Red and Amber warnings in place across parts of the UK in readiness for the arrival of Storm Eunice today.

The current advice is for everyone to stay at home and not travel, and the government is putting in place as many protective measures as possible across the country. However, we thought it might be useful to put out a few suggestions to help in case you are affected.

Power cuts

As we saw earlier in the year with Storms Malik and Corrie, power cuts during storms are common and, unfortunately, can last long after a storm has hit.

We have a wide range of lighting options available – from hand-held torches to spotlights and cordless and rechargeable worklights. Features such as waterproofing and shockproofing mean the various torches and lights are not only robust and durable, but they are particularly practical for use in emergencies.

If you’re worried about losing power for longer periods, you could consider investing in a generator. These can provide essential backup in cases of power loss for homeowners and corporate and business premises. A generator can bridge the gap between the main power source going down and coming back up – whether you need to keep a laptop powered or ensure fridges, freezers and heaters continue running. We offer a number of power generators, with options to power everything from those laptops and fridges to power tools. Our blog Choosing the right generator for you has all the information needed to help you select the one best suited for your needs.

Flooding

In our January blog, we wrote about submersible water pumps. As the name suggests, these pumps work by being totally submerged under the water and are extremely useful for getting rid of flooding from inside or outside the home.

We also have a number of petrol water pumps, which are particularly suited for areas of heavier flooding and where deeper water drainage is required.

If you’re unlucky enough to experience flooding, do take a look at our selection of pumps to see which would be most appropriate for your particular case.

Trees and fences

Falling trees and branches may not be the only collateral damage from the storm. High winds can bring down fences and damage sheds, arbours and gazebos. Our DIY and Gardening section may help with tools to get started on the garden tidy-up once the storm has passed.

Snow

Snow has been forecast for some of the more northerly areas of the country. While the advice for during the storm itself is to not venture out, some people with essential jobs may have to travel, and snow may remain in the aftermath of the storm. If you haven’t already read our January blog, do take a look to see our advice for help in snowy conditions.

We’re all noticing at Draper that traffic is very light on the roads and that people are heeding the advice to stay safe at home. We hope that Storm Eunice will pass quickly and with as little damage as possible. But if you are affected by the storm and need any advice or support with any of the Draper products, please do contact us.
